Radar Golf

Rajeet Guha
Radar Golf is a new company that has come up with the business proposition to attach electronic tags to golf balls manufactured all over the world in order to locate lost golf balls within seconds on the golf course. The lost golf balls can be located even up to a 100 feet away with a handheld electronic device that the company will manufacture. The handheld units can be attached to the golf cart. The company says the new technology will help in removing the two-stroke penalty for lost golf balls and will increase the pace of play. The company claims the technology will make the game more enjoyable and will invite more people into the game. It says the technology will also improve golfers’ scores.
The company says it has been meeting with major manufacturers to license the technology and resell the handheld units. However, it will be difficult for the company to find golf ball manufacturers who will include the electronic tag in the golf ball because golf ball manufacturers depend on players losing golf balls for their businesses to flourish. An important factor for the viability of launching this commercial venture is whether the cost of the new golf balls with the technology will be substantially higher than the ones without the new technology. Whether there will be enough demand for the new golf balls will also be an important consideration for a venture capitalist like me because I don’t want to invest money in a venture that will not be profitable. If I had to take a stand on whether I will fund this venture I would probably choose not to fund this venture because I don’t think it is going to be a success. The success of this business depends entirely on golf ball manufacturing companies agreeing to include the electronic tag in their golf balls. I don’t think they would want to include the electronic tag in the golf balls because being able to locate lost golf balls would harm them. They would want more golf balls to be lost so that they can produce more. Therefore I will not fund this venture.
